Perfection

The weather this week has been pretty close to perfect. A bit more rain would have been nice, but at least we had a sip. The nights are very cool, almost cold, but the days warm up pretty well.

We aren't able to get away or travel far this years, so we take days off during the week and go wandering.
On Monday we went into the Algonquin Park interior. We planned to go on a main entry point and then head off on some obscure trails, so we had to buy a permit. As a disabled senior it is only $9 for my vehicle.
So, first stop was Bonnechere Provincial Park Store for that. I was quite shocked to see they are selling alcohol in the store there!
We followed the Bonnechere River up Turners  Road which then turns into Basin Depot Road. The Bonnechere widens into small lakes along it's path. This is Stevenson Lake. We are still outside Algonquin at this point, so there are a few cottages on this lake.  It's a great lake for canoeing and fishing. We used to bring my grandson here when he was a youngster.

Do you see the hind end of the little coyote heading into the brush?  He was just a little fellow. At first I thought it was a fox. We also saw a nice young bear just a bit further on. The road is in very poor (BUMPY) shape due to all the logging traffic. Fortunately we didn't meet any of the logging trucks on this journey. We did see a grader though so they will continue to work on it.

John aka AC asked me about some of the back roads that are accessible without going through gated access. This is the usual condition. Depending how often they are traveled they can be very muddy, have big ruts on either side of a hump and lots, Lots, Lots of rocks.

This is the grave of the MacDonald infant. The poor wee lad is there alone in the place called Sligo. I'm glad someone has cleaned it up. It was so overgrown the last time we were through there you couldn't even see the signpost.

Basin Depot road is named for this little crossing. Back in logging days this was a bit of a store as well as the home of a family. It is kept up pretty well and thank goodness has not be vandalized.

Basin Creek comes out of Basin Lake and crosses under this bridge into Bonnechere River.

It was a nice day to wander into the back country and I was thrilled to see a nice healthy young bear!
My neighbour tells me there is a bear wandering around here too, but we haven't seen any sign of him here as yet. It has been at his place, which was a surprise because he has a yappy dog.
This afternoon we are hoping to be going plum picking. If any local folks want to know where the bountiful wild plums are, check out the east side of Mountainview Road just past the Killaloe Fair Gounds. They usually peak just after the fair so hopefully we haven't missed the peak.

I saw a post today that we are passed 8PM sunsets now. We won't see sunset later than 8 until the later part of April.

  1. I was just noticing before 8 tonight that darkness is descending.

  3. There certainly is a different look to the daylight now, and it is coming much later in the AM, which is what I notice most, being an early riser.
Basin Depot is a nice drive. Have you hiked into High Falls on the Little Bonnechere? Going up White Mountain Chute on the other side of the river is also an interesting drive, but rougher.
    Did you find any plums?

    1. We haven't gone in to High Falls but we do follow the Little Bonnechere. The drive up WhiteMountain was pretty smooth a couple of weeks ago. Basin Depot was in bad shape. We got just a handful of plums, that's all. Most of the trees from our favorite picking stretch between the church and the fair grounds are bare. Are you getting smoke from the Wilno fire?

    2. No smoke, but hearing the choppers all Monday PM.
The logging trucks are hard on the road.

  4. That's a nice little jaunt to get out and about. I chuckle to myself each time you express excitement about seeing bears. I doubt I would have the same reaction.
Sad to see the sun disappear early, sign of the times for sure.
We had a young fox cross the highway in front of us on our way home today. Sauntering as was the snapping turtle (can they do anything else?) crossing on a busy highway!
