Yesterday morning was quite a shocker. It was raining down snowballs when I opened the blinds. The snow was like a heavily loaded sponge.
By noon the sun was peeking in and out so we decided to take a road trip. I had a birthday gift to deliver to great grandson BL. I won't see him next week but wanted to make sure it was there.
We motored on through a beautiful farming valley to a local Mennonite farm. We were off to buy our years supply of maple syrup.
Have you ever been in a Mennonite home? At first glance it appears very spartan, but then I came to feel how very cozy it really is. The frivolity of most of our homes is missing, and thats okay. The home is exceptionally clean, bright, warm and smells amazing. A big wood burning cook stove has pride of place at one end of the big open room and the treadle sewing machine at the other. I'd be happy there.
On our way home we stopped by Poppa and B for a quick visit. They were busy trying to put groceries away and get a bird out of the kitchen! Starlings are very opportunistic birds. If there is a tiny gap they will come on in. Apparently they like to come down the chimney if P&B don't have a fire in the woodburner.
We made a burger for supper. We hadn't had one in ages so it sure hit the spot.
And that's the kind of day we had. Not sure what excitement we will get up to for the weekend.
I remember my grandmother's kitchen with the coal burner and hot water tank stove and I inherited her treadle sewing machine. (Yes, I AM that old. Sigh.)
ReplyDeleteI grew up in my maternal ancestors original homestead in Peterborough. It was pretty original right to the end! My old treadle sits not two feet from me as I typw.
DeleteThat kitchen is reminiscent of kitchens of my childhood. A treadle sewing machine was my first one.
ReplyDeleteThe migratory birds are starting to filter back. No starlings up here...so far.
Happy birthday to the kid!
ReplyDeleteIt was a shock, the snow!!!
I love big old style homes like that. I'm way being cleaning them though. I remember warmth and cozy feelings from Moms, although not Mennonite, a wood burning stove makes a world of difference.
