Monday Night Choir

The singing was loud just outside my bedroom window last night.

There were TWO owls in the tree right there. I suspect they were watching for mice cleaning up on the ground under the bird feeder (now empty). They were having quite the chit chat, or was it an argument? It was loud and prolonged none the less.

Also coming along to use it's alto voice was mr. Whip Poor Will. It wandered down the hill several times and sat in front of the shed and put his voice to the chorus. Or was it more than one bird? Who knows, they were both LOUD.

The phoebe nest that was on the ledge above the side door fell down on to a chair. The other pair are still stuffing moss along the window trim. They have NO chance of making a nest stick there. I get out a sharp stick and dig it out again. The window trim doesn't need this decoration. The phoebe's aren't to smart this year. We have a shed and two high porches with shelves underneath they are welcome to use. Mr. M. has also chased several of them out of the garage!

  1. Maybe it was a love song! Hope you enjoyed the two choruses.

  2. We haven't had a whipoorwill for quite some time, but I recall one about where your owls were. Loud? No question. Also phoebe hatchlings when parent is not fast enough with lunch. We had a nest under the screened porch the first year we built. Since then I destroy the nests as soon as I see a sign of action. Apparently birds will return to a site year after year even if it was not successful. Bird brains?
Nice to have the bird life though. I am putting the hummer feeders up tomorrow.

  3. Been hearing the Barred Owls carrying on in the day time. We also have a Whip-poor-will visiting, 4ish AM...regularly. Our wake up call!

  4. Phoebes and Mourning Doves must be related. The doves make the poorest excuses for nests too.

  5. Once my hearing aids are out, I don't hear much.

  6. Used to have that problem with Doves making nests on the end of our awning. No protection from the elements, then they are constantly calling out to their mates, to help feed their young.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  7. I hope the phoebes relocate and soon! I love that you hear birds at night!

    1. The nest was so poorly built that it fell down. They are trying to get into the garage now. We sure can't have that!!!
